U.S. Senate Judiciary Internal Security Subcommittee on Communism in Education holds hearings in Boston.

March 26, 1953

The hearings are held at the Federal Building. George Faxon, a math teacher at Boston Latin school, is subsequently suspended for “conduct unbecoming a teacher” for refusing to answer questions from the committee. He had previously refused to sign the latest version of a Communist Exclusion Oath required of teachers. Max Weitzman, a fifth grade teacher at the Audubon School in Dorchester, is suspended three weeks later for similar reasons. Herbert Philbrick testifies before the committee on May 8, 1953.
